The opening ceremony for the International Year of Chemistry 2011 in Germany took place on February 9th in Berlin. In her speech, German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel emphasized the importance of the German chemical industry. „We need young people who are enthusiastic about chemistry“, she said. The participants of the „Formel EIns“ student competition certainly are such people; after mastering the challenge of transporting an egg with energy generated on-site, they three winning teams received their awards from the hands of Chanceller Merkel.
The Forum Chemie, an alliance of nine German chemical associations including DECHEMA, coordinates the IYC 2011 activities in Germany and has provided two videos of the opening ceremony and the Formel EIns competition (German language).
